He adapted the design to increase the strength of the seat frame by adding a brace that transferred the load from the more vulnerable front legs to those at the back.

This saved the tenon joints which become stressed when the chair is rocked onto its back legs. Not only did this improve the chairs durability but added a certain delicate elegance.
