Do not leave furniture in direct sunlight. South facing windows and modern conservatories may be a nice spot for your favourite furniture, but with no shade the sun's light can destroy the look of furniture very quickly. Wood and fabric are particularly susceptible to UV radiation from the sun, making them faded and dry.
Conservatories can also be a bad place to leave antique furniture, the heat can attack the glue and finish. If you have any problems with excess moisture in your conservatory this is very bad for furniture. The moisture will be absorbed into the fibres and can cause damage to the very structure of the furniture, as well as rot and mold.
Likewise, repeated changes to moisture levels can have similar effects. Wooden furniture absorbs the moisture and can contract and expand, causing cracking and splitting as well as breaks in joints as the wood moves more than the glue. |
