About

Cornish Furniture expert Nick Greenwood began his furniture restoration career upon leaving school, he was apprenticed to his father Peter and also completed a City & Guilds qualification in carpentry and joinery. Peter had been a boat builder in Looe which was a reserved occupation during WW2. In 1947 Peter began his own furniture restoration business with Nick joining him in 1973.

Such is the reputation of the standard and quality of Greenwood work Nick continues to maintain several of his father's original customers to this day.In the late seventies Nick spent some time in Iran undertaking French polishing and finishing work on a newly constructed Hyatt hotel in the capital Tehran before having to return to the UK due to the overthrow of the Shah and continuing political unrest, making the city unsafe for foreign workers.

He followed this with a period of work in Doha in the Persian Gulf also French polishing in newly built luxury hotels. On his return from abroad, feeling that he wanted to make his own way, Nick moved to Surrey where he set up his own business which he ran successfully for eight years before Cornwall called him back home.

Initially he ran his business from Looe but as the business expanded he needed bigger premises and four years ago moved to his workshop at Hall Barton Farm in Pelynt (five miles outside of Looe).

In addition to his restoration work on both antique and modern furniture Nick has a keen eye for design and has worked with customers to make individual bespoke pieces of furniture to their own specification and requirements.

He is keen to use classic designs but likes to incorporate structural differences to better suit the demands of modern living. Particularly in Cornwall many homes are of an age where uniformity is not the norm.

Nick's skills mean that he has been able to restore, for example, a staircase in an old fisherman's cottage  keeping the character of the cottage whilst replacing the original worn out staircase. He has also custom made an external door to fit a far from standard sized doorway. In order to ensure that these valuable historical properties maintain their charm and originality Nick will always ensure that he replaces the original features as closely as he is able using modern materials and finishes whilst ensuring, to use a Cornish phrase, "it look like it grow'd there".

Nick is also happy to provide quotes and undertake insurance work, fire and water damage, also damage caused during removals. As a sideline Nick has an interest in musical instruments and has made guitars, mandolins and his own design of electric violins.
